           Don"t know if they still ldo do ? but DGW used to give you a method to temper , whem you purchased the spring stock . There seems to be many ways to reach the same goal . I never heard about using the lead , but sounds like there would be less chance of getting brittle spots ?  [hmm] thmbsup

Any heating method that maintains an even (and lower temperature than a flame) heat will certainly help avoid the dreaded over hardening and subsequent brittleness. This is just one reason that induction hardening is used in heating thin stock during modern production. At least that is my way of seeing it. Hmm, wonder where ah can put the borrow on one a them things???
