Hey RB, I am going to be looking for info about how they did things back then. The Europeans had some slick ways of doing things still in use today, one of which you already mentioned, a plug over a fastener, hides and waterproofs it!

Rocky,
I do indeed mean beehives. Stopped keeping bees last year after too many stings in too short of a time. My Doc suggested either quitting the bees or experimenting with a bee sting, just outside the emergency room. Have seen some decorator beehives for the overly rich suburban folks made of really nice wood left either unfinished or clear finished and a copper roof for looks. Really!

Hey Otter, sorry to hear you had to quit, with all the problems associated with bees, it makes me feel bad when another member of our dwindling community has to stop. I wish I had your knowledge and experience, I say that without even knowing how much you had. It seems like whenever I learn something about bees, I have a 1000 more new questions. I live at a higher elevation here in NH, so that doesn't help me either. So, I want to learn more, all the time. If you have been bee keeping for awhile you know what I mean.
I have made a few planter boxes out of old hive boxes to sit on the ground, basically to cover an area that a tip of a big rock starts to poke through. It keeps the dirt in, shows up well, and makes it easy to water. I saw the "official" white house hive, or pictures of it, and I have read about copper roofs, but wow, those must cost a fortune! But, this is a BP ML forum, so I will limit this. PM me about the bees if you like, that would be cool, especially if you have any pics of the copper roofs. Rocky

hello Rocky. if you were still looking for some wood patterns to do, look in patterns and designs. there is a detailed pattern for building a camp chair and a folding camp table. i believe the threads are on page 3. plus there is one for a camp kitchen too!   flwa
