The green cotton duck will be great this fall but was pretty warm. I just finished this one out of Osnaburg ( I picked up 12 yds for $1.85 a yd) and it is much more comfortable out in the sun. I made this one a full size smaller with the intent of wearing it under the heavier shirt this fall, now if I don't get a full size bigger by then..................... pnic I have to trim the hat brim yet.........

Nice looking outfit! Forgive the ignorance, but how does the osnaburg feel?

Blackfeet

osnaburg  is a really loose woven fabric that looks like scaled down burlap. It felt a little rough the first time that I wore it because it hadn't been pre-washed. After the first hand wash, it felt pretty good. The thing that I like about it is that it is very light and airy. I wore that kit, with rifle on a 6 mile day trek two Saturdays ago in 85° heat and the sweat evaporated quickly and the airflow kept me very comfortable. I wear it around doing yardwork all weekend to grunge it up a little and it is great in the sun.

Osnaburg normally shrinks to half its size on the first trup through the washer/dryer.  It also unravels at the seams at a frantic rate.  If the seams are not finished out properly the garmet will self distruct at the seams.  It is not unusual to have to trim globs of unraveled thread from the seams after each washing.

Once washed it fluffs up and I found that it was killer hot in the warm climate of Tennessee.  Once the temps top 80 you suffer.  It was fine in fall/winter/spring but impossible to endure between May and October.

After springing the $5 a yard for good linen the first time I was a believer.  All of my summer outfits are now made of linen.

After moving north I have abandoned osnaburg completely and go straight from winter flannel to summer linen.  I find that in the Ky/Oh/In area one can wake in the morning freezing to death and have temps in the 90s by lunch.  You can also have Friday of cold drizzle followed by Saturdayday of scorching heat followed by Sunday with sleet blowing sideways, and all this on a 4th of July weekend. flwa

I actually found the opposite to be true in my case. The Osnaburg breathes and the linen hunting frock is way too hot. I did take precautions. I pre-shrunk the material before making the shirt and double and triple stitched the edges thmbsup Not PC but I have worn it extensively while mowing the lawn, weed and brushcutting. The locals probably find that amusing. I even take the occasional trek in the woods in clout and leggings and full gear and rifle during the mid summer heat. I found that it dried very fast. I think the thread count may actually come into play here. [hmm] cuch

By the way, the observant among you may have noticed a contradiction from the beginnings of the thread. My better half had indeed pre-washed the fabric before I started, seems that she knew a bit more about it than I did.

I have two Onasburg shirts now and one linen... Bulldog Lady told me the linen one is for Sunday go to meeting and if I got caught wearing it for any other purpose (like huntiing) I would be the hunted one.....  bunkr   I also have one cotton shirt she made (the first one) out of a cotton bed sheet as a test, and I still wear it as much as the others....

Nice-looking outfit! I got an osnaberg (sp?) shirt from Townsend and it's really nice. After a few washings, it's really soft and hasn't even shrunk a lot (they may pre-shrink. I'd check first).
