Well guys I hope to be the prowd owner of my first "built for me" flint lock sometime in the next few months. She's going to be a 40 cal. so I thought it was time to start asking you 40 cal. shooter's for some loading info. What are some of your favorite 40 round ball loads? hi: I turned a powder measure for my 32 cal, but went a little deep and she holds 45 grains of 3 f....so....I figure it's most likely going to be best for my new 40 when she arrives. blah??

40 grains 3f in my Jack Gardner rifle. .10 patch .395 roundball. Lube 103 when I could get it. My moosemilk now, we sell it online...
BTW, the toughest thing about using moosemilk is milking the moose! HAH! I kill me... ROFL

It depends on the gun, but 35-45 gr 3f  and 60 gr 3f for a "hot" load and either spit or hand lotion for lube. Most barrels will work fine with either a .390 or .395 ball and .015-.018 patch, but a friend has one with a colerain barrel that demands a .380 ball and a .010 patch. It has a realy tight barrel that might be considered a .38 instead of a .40 and from what he has found out this is normal with the colerain barrels.

Moosemilk works fine in most of my barrels for lube, but spit and hand lotion have been my standbys for years.

Woody,
I have a couple of .40's and have found an accurate load to be .395 ball with .015 pre lubed patch over 35 grains of 3F. Each rifle is going to be a little different due to barrel specs, loading proceedure and other factors. I think you will like the .40 a lot once you have had a little experience with it and find the load that yours likes. See you at the range. If that measure turns out to be a little big, pour some candle wax into the bottom, tamp it down until it measures what you want.  thmbsup

Thanks Mark.  Wish I could have made the Turkey Shoot, but getting my 91 year old Father-in-Law home from a two month rehab program had priority. See you at the next meeting....I hope. hdslp
