I have been wanting to get some kind of Primitive Camp Cooler for a couple of years now...I found an old wood "Feed Box" at an Antique/Junkque store it was in poor shape but all of the parts seemed to be there..and at $4.00 I couldn't even buy the wood to make a box that cheaply ... I spent a few hours nailing, clamping and gluing it back tougher.. It turned out even better than I had hoped.  I got a deal at the local lumber company on a sheet of 1 inch thick R5 foam board cut it to size to line the box and lid on sale $6.95 because of a damaged end and corner... The most expensive thing was the Aluminum Duct tape to seal and waterproof the seams. $9.95...  pnic
Finally gut one of those "Round Tuits" we talk about  hdslp  finished..

I still need to figure out a latch/Hasp set up for the lid ... But no more hiding the Cooler in the tent or under a blanket thmbsup  chrrs

Way to stay on the cheap! Find yourself a spray can of water based enamel and water based primer. Prime it well, then spray at least two coats of the enamel. The water based won't melt the foam and it should give you years of "foam ball free" use.  thmbsup
I am the one your mom warned you about!

Thanks for the photos of a great idea. The next time I look at a old trunk or other type of box I will probably see it in a new way.

Back in the '70s, my wife and I drove out to Wyoming to elk hunt. I made a similar-type cooler from scratch from 1/2" plywood and sheets of styrofoam. It had to fit in a narrow, tall space in a cab-over camper. It worked out perfect because the meat from the bull I killed fit perfectly with enough room for dry ice.
When we got home (2800 miles), the dry ice had evaporated but the meat was still frozen solid.

They work good.
