well here she is i recieved this old horn in bad shape. So i redid the plug and sanded all of the scratches and gauger out of her, made my own strap and decided to try my hand at scratchin. not the best but not too bad for first time. Im proud to wear her now.

thanks guys i just added 4 flowers to the vines, ill post another pic later. i used a carbide pic to do the scratchin. i need to learn how to do some shadeing. but im happy so far.

Nice first engraving!  To many times a person just starting out engraving tries to get too fancy too complicated design. You did good in that department! Skill comes with dedication and practice!  When I taught a class awhile back at a community colledge in my area. One student was getting discouraged because she kept having a lot of "over-run", with her engraving.  I showed her two original horns and some photo's in books of original powder horns, with several "over-runs" and very rough curves in the engraving!  Probably, the original person who scratched those horns, only did that one horn! Heck! I still do it once in awhile after many, many powder horns! The secret is to cover it up or just plan lie and say that you wanted that GOOF in there and keep plugging away!!!....
