Made some of my own ramrods jags this weekend. I found you can use a 30/30 shell case cut (I use a pipe cutting tool plumbers use) at the neck down leaving the straight case then sliding that over a 3/8" hickory rod of course Gorlilla gluing it & pining it to the rod. The 30/30 case rim fits perfect in a .50 cal bore, I just worked the rim of the 30/30 a little with a file to allow for a cleaning patch. I'm going out today & shoot a little to see how it works for sure also as a ball seater.

I have been using those for rod ends for some time!
I also remove the primer and drill/tap to 10/32 to accept my rod end tools.
If you can get it into a good vise and under a drill press, you can take a 1/2" bit and make a centered cup to closely fit the ball diameter.
The 30-30 seems to have a little more meat in the butt end. .38's are a little thin!
