Reading this thread just reinforces my belief that you should not make a cow into a pig, If you want a pig, sell the cow and buy a pig.

Converting a percussion gun into a flint,in many cases, just isn't worth the trouble. Flint to percussion is decidedly easier, due to the design. Fairly straight forward.

But when you get into patten breech's and CVA's "goofy" drum-into-plug-drilled plug face system,I feel it's best to leave well enough alone and build/buy dedicated flint part's. My 2 cent's,and THAT'S over priced!

I prefer tig welding to wire. I guess the way to think of it is like oxy acetylene without the flame. It does require a much cleaner environment and more prep work. With tig you can "sneak" up on the heat and push material around without necessarily having to add filler. It does require a very steady hand because you are holding the electrode very close to the metal and it is easy to make the puddle jump onto the electrode, not a good thing.

I was lucky in my youth. My dad was a working foreman and a welding inspector. I learned from the best   ;D

"Getting to the point that I highlighted and turned blue in your post, though -- if the barrel isn't fitted to anything and, from the sounds of it, it seems you don't have a stock for it, AND you want it to be a flinter, I would lose the cast breechplug, re-tap the breech of the barrel to 3/4-16, and buy this breechplug from Dixie Gun Works: http://www.dixiegunworks.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_128_512&products_id=7389

This plug is roughly $1.50-$2.00 cheaper than machined plugs designed to fit specific sizes of barrels. Its tang is oversized to allow it to be fitted to literally any size or shape of barrel up to 1 1/8" diameter at the breech.

One thing about fitting a 3/4-16 plug -- there's no need to waste time soaking the plug and barrel and trying to persuade the cast breechplug to come out. Hacksaw it off just behind the barrel breech, then drill out the shank left in the barrel. You'll be enlarging the 16mm threaded hole for tapping the new 3/4" threads, anyway."

I am liking that idea. I think I will go that route.... OOOOO.... how I love lathe work  dntn dntn dntn

Path: I have a BAD BAD habit of "doing it because I can."  How else would I find out if I can't?  ucrzy bunkr

Now that's something I've learned lots of times... usually 'can'...but not always or even usually worth it...fun to try new stuff though, isn't it??
