Young guys should hang out with old guys; old guys know stuff.

Newtire

My application letter to George pretty much explains it so I'll just do a copy and paste of it here to introduce myself.

So, Here goes.

I have various reasons for wanting to be a part of your community but the biggest one is a growing need for me to get myself more aligned with a simpler way of life.  As a boy, my Dad and uncles would open up the gun cabinet in Grandma's kitchen.  In it were a 94 Winchester, an L.C. Smith double, an 1890 Winchester pump.  Each of them had a story or 2 that went along with them.  The highlight for my brother & I was when Dad would reach into the back & haul out the .40 caliber Scheutzen rifle.  It weighs 17-1/2 pounds and has a Remington cast steel barrel.  I ended up inheriting it when my Dad passed away.  A machinist instructor showed me how to make a tool and I was able to fresh out the rifling and shoot it.  Sorry so long winded but that old rifle has helped me unwind on many a Sunday afternoon.  My interests include a few more modern leverguns and revolvers and a Martini Henry but my main interests tend to gravitate towards Pennsylvania type flintlocks, smoothbore trade guns as well as hunting and claybird shooting with percussion doubles.

I just find these guns so fascinating I guess.  It's interesting to take them out and shoot them instead of hanging them on the wall.  I'm sure Eliphalet Remington didn't make that barrel on my Grandpa's old Scheutzen to collect dust in the closet.

I consider myself the caretaker of my collection of guns.  I am 68 years old, a retired trade school automotive and truck drivetrain instructor, work as a consultant for a major tool and diagnostic instrument company over the internet on a part time basis.  I was born in a small farming town along the Mississippi River and spent a very happy youth exploring out in the woods.  1968 saw me caught up in the "conflict" over in Southeast Asia.  I joined the Navy and did a 4-year stint.  Went to WestPac twice.  Got out and wound up working on cars until the teaching job came up.  31 years later, I escaped Kalifornistan and moved to Star, Idaho and here I am.

I am a Dad of 2 great kids (who are both good shots) and am headed towards Grandpahood towards the end of this year.
