What was the generally practical means people used to carry flintlocks? When you're walking across country you're not going to keep your hands full of flintlock any more than you would carry a bow and quiver in your hands. Was there a type of musket or rifle developed for practical travel just like we have all kinds for carry these days? For sure they developed what is nowadays called "concealed carry". Seems like the need was there and somebody would have filled it.
What would have worked for you?

Good question. One hardly ever sees provisions for a sling or strap on any of the old none military style rifles. Makes it hard to drag a deer out some times.

That's why a light, well balanced hunting rifle is so much better in the field when there's much walking to be done. hntr

Yeah, if I was tramping around the boonies I'd have to have something about like a TC Cherokee / Seneca in 45 or bigger that I could pull right up out of it's quiver. Would probably be a smoothbore for big food and small food.

I don't know, maybe it's just me but I love the feel of a fine long gun in my hands when I'm out and about.  The lighter ones make my arms feel better and the finer ones make my soul feel better. hntr

You also have to remember there was danger everywhere all the time. Never want to get caught without it!

"hold on a might, I gotta get this off of my back" was probley never muttered in the Old Northwest territory. lol. Yes, I have a sling on my rifle when I trek. Sling use is not very authentic on a rifle for a ranger or scout but it sure is handy now days that we don't have to worry about a potential ambush behind every tree.

Almost as bad as "Hey time out... I gotta reload the pistol!"  famouse last words from the battle of the bighorn....
"The table is small signifying one prisoner alone against his or her suppressors..."

Ranger
i also have a sling for mine. but most of the time it is tied to the back of my shooting beg and use when only crossing streams or areas where I have to use
both hands. It is a simple pocket and strap with loop on the strap. I place loop
over the barrel and stock in the pocket.  Historically correct porbably not, but it works for me.
